The significance of eye tracking- and movement assessments

Eye tracking- and movement assessments are a novel, new way eye care providers can objectively measure what our eyes are doing “behind-the-scenes”.

Performing any advanced visual task, requires many complicated processes, most of which we are hardly aware of. Reading is one such visual skill, requiring the seamless integration of many visual, and higher-order cognitive functions.

Poor reading skills then, can be attributed to anything impacting on these functions. This can range from rare and unlikely diseases affecting the visual pathway- and brain, to something as simple (and easily overlooked) as poor vision.

In-between these two extremes there are many more subtle factors that may impact on reading, and vision such as: pharmacological side-effects, difficulty with sustained focusing, poor inter eye co- ordination, developmental problems, visual processing disorders, visual stress, mental fatigue, lack of interest and off course poor practical reading skills.

Identifying and managing these more subtle problem areas may involve several different occupational health practitioners and one- or more management strategies. Some of these may be standalone, while others may overlap with each other. This can be particularly challenging for parents who are often bombarded with many different diagnoses and recommendations.

Objective eye tracking evaluations, while not a treatment in itself, can provide important information necessary to differentiate and rule out certain problems and quickly evaluate the impact of different therapies on the end- goal i.e precise eye movement during the act of reading.

While we may not yet understand all the minute intricacies involved during these processes, we can accurately measure and use this great bio-feedback tool to see how our eyes respond to different treatments.
